Court rejects Rozina’s petition seeking return of passport
The Dhaka court today denied the petition of journalist Rozina Islam for the return of her passport two mobile phones as well as PID cards.
Rozina an experienced reporter at Prothom Alo, was sued by the health ministry on May 17, under the Official Secrets Act-1923 as well as the Penal Code on charges of theft and taking photographs of "highly sensitive" government documents.
She was arrested following her being held for over five hours in the Secretariat earlier in the same day.
The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Abu Bakar Siddique, gave the order in today's hearing following the fact that Rozina and her lawyer appeared before the court.
The police officer in charge of the investigation matter of the Detective Branch of police, Md Morshedul Islam, appeared before the court and gave his reasons for whether or not to give the property back to Rozina.
Rozina filed her petition with the court on Wednesday.
On May 23rd the court of the Metropolitan Magistrate Dhaka Mohammad Baki Billah granted interim bail to Rozina with the condition that she surrender her passport under an amount of Tk 5,000 with two guarantors, one of whom has to be a lawyer and the other must be a legal guardian.
The police seized her mobile phone as well as her PID cards during an investigation.
